Domestic Bliss and Other Temptations
Domestic Bliss and Other Temptations
In this series, I explore how lingering desires for excessive consumer goods – a suburban house, a nuclear family – are in essence sexual desires. In constructions inspired by magazine advertisements of the 1950’s, I attach squares of painted patterns to the images which contradict, reinforce, or parody their ambiguous narratives. Although the happy housewives and their shiny, spotless homes have taken on a nostalgic patina, the underlying seductive promises of the American Dream and its abundances resonate, if a little off-key, in our ever-more-consumer-saturated contemporary culture.
